Satō Kanzan was born October 12, 1947 in Sako, Tome-gun, Miyagi Prefecture. He graduated from Tohoku Gakuin University. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Hosoda Yōzan and Ujiie Kōzan, earning the certification of Dai-Shihan (grand master) and the rank of Chikurin-ken. Won the gold prize in the 6th Honkyoku Competition, the bronze prize in the 8th, and the silver in the 10th. He was a highly-regarded instructor of shakuhachi performance.
